This blog post is a continuation from part 2 of the Unveiling the Level 5 leader in me series. This is a study of two books written by John C. Maxwell, a renowned author of transformational leadership material. His work has transformed many at individual, organizational and at national levels. Having read the books, “The 21 irrefutable Laws of Leadership” and “The 5 levels of leadership”, this is an analysis of what each of them is about and how they relate to each other, in inspiring, directing and charting the journey of a successful leader. In this blog post I integrate these two books into my leadership journey and conclude the series.
Integrating Laws and Levels of leadership into my Journey
Having studied these two books, I realized that I am currently a level 1 leader. I also have strengths in five laws, including The law of Addition (5), The law of Solid Ground (6), The Law of empowerment (12), The Law of victory (15) and The law of explosive growth (20) and a weakness in one law – The law of process (3). The rest of the laws are in my middle ground. According to the Author’s advice, my strategy should be to master my strengths and then embark on growing my middle ground. I look to be excellent in each of these five laws. Being that these laws can actually be learned, I will embark on learning the law of process, instead of delegating it to someone better than I am, as John C. Maxwell suggests, with these in my middle ground. My strategy is to. Improve and maximize my strengths, learn how to be better at the middle ground and delegate the weaknesses.

I must start by refusing to be deceived by my current leadership position and value my people to the extent that I grow myself for their sake, and start to think like a level 2 leader. For example, “we work together, and I am here to serve you.” Here, I will apply my strengths – Laws 5,6,12,15 and 20, while learning the laws 1, 2 and 3. Since law 3 is my weakness, I intend to put more effort in mastering it. In order to keep strong on my journey, I have partnered with four board members for accountability.
Once I am at level 2, I will by all means understand that this is my effort, not the effort of those I lead, and that relationship with the people I lead is paramount. I intend to understand and be intentional about categorizing the people I lead into the takers, developers, acquaintances and friends at each place I lead, and then relate with them respectively. My growth focus is in continuing to master my strengths – Laws 5, 6, 12, 15 and 20 and yet, master Laws 2, 9, 10 and 14.
Levels 3 and 4 will definitely be harder and might take longer. I will focus on the vision of the organization I am leading to ensure we have results versus super awesome relationships. For me to get to level 4, I need to understand that production is not enough, we need to reproduce. My focus will be on empowering those I lead to be excellent leaders, and encourage them to fly. I will continue growing and the world will hand the pinnacle over to me.
Conclusion
In conclusion, these books allow me to strategize my journey into a level 5 leader. I choose to excel at my leadership strength to help me walk up that ladder to Pinnacle, from Position – level 1.
